English for Ayerheads

A site for all my "Ayer-heads"

Like an open book, here I am....

It's never easy for a super hero to reveal his identity, but on occasion, it becomes a must.  I reveal myself, now, the true Super Teacher, is none other, than I: Jonathan Ayer!
Each and every day of my professional career, I attempt to be as super as I can be.   I have always known that I was meant to teach.  Whether sitting and admiring my own teachers in school, or while playing counselor to kids at a YMCA day camp in my early years of "working," I had the itch to teach.  It is my hope that through example I can lead, reach, and inspire all those I connect with.
In the classroom, I am often quite open and familiar with my students.  I believe that I not only stand in front of them as a utility to impart knowledge on them, but as a light in the world showing them what a person can achieve and become.  I want all my students to do more than be able to communicate well.  I want them to feel some of the same passions I have for literature, writing, technology, and life.   And so.... I teach.
I grew up in the central southern part of New Hampshire and went to the only inner-city school in that state, Manchester Central, where I credit an amazing faculty for giving me the wings to fly on.  It was in the halls of this diverse and crowded school that I learned to become an individual.  I then went to Boston University where I majored in English with a certification in Secondary Education in English (essentially a double-major without the second degree).  I then taught for three years at Falmouth High School on Cape Cod in Massachusetts.  Under the supervision of a rigorous Department head, I became a strong and able teacher of English.
My wife and I then moved to Southern New Jersey (near to Philly) where I continue to teach English for Deptford High School.  I have also been fortunate to coach and advise.  I have proudly been head coach to the Boys' Cross Country team and served as Assistant Coach (for throwing) to the Boys' Spring Track program.  I also spend much of my winter advising the Mock Trial team and Debate Club, two rewarding and challenging organizations.
I am currently in the process of attaining my Masters of Education in  Informational Systems - Educational Technology from Penn State University. It is my hope that I can use this to continue spreading my other passion in teaching through technology.  I have begun teaching workshops for professional development and mentoring my fellow colleagues in ways to effectively incorporate technology to better enhance our education.
Outside of school, there's a lot to get to know.  But I'm also not to atypical from the average person.  I like good TV and movies.  I like to ride my Jeep Wrangler and kayak.  I ski, hike, camp, see lots of sports (Go Flyers! Go Red Sox! Go Pats! Go Celts!), travel, and play with my dogs and my new son.To know me more, you'll just have to meet me. (Or write a letter in a self-addressed envelope asking me.. bla bla bla....;)
